With the term "breathing walls," advertising creators and all experts vividly describe the diffusion or penetration of water vapor from living spaces through walls.
Most moisture problems in buildings during energy renovations stem from the installation of new windows with efficient sealing, which greatly reduces air exchange. Therefore, the amount of water vapor generated in a space (breathing, cooking, washing, drying) is always several times larger than the ability to pass through exterior walls - regardless of the type of material used in construction.
Harmful effects (such as damp walls and mold) are even more pronounced in locations with insufficient or inadequate thermal insulation.
The assertion that choosing polystyrene insulation causes excessive moisture in the room is therefore not justified.
Expanded polystyrene is recognized in most EU countries as a material used in construction that is self-extinguishing - insulation that in a fire melts, but does not spread the fire further. Facade systems with expanded polystyrene insulation, covered with reinforced plaster and finishing layer, fall into the excellent E class reaction to fire. All EPS construction panels are classified as E class reaction to fire according to EN 13501-1 standard, or class B1 according to DIN 4102 ("self-extinguishing material").
From what is stated, it is obvious that there are many countries in the EU where 90% of all facades are insulated with facade polystyrene. EPS facade insulation has often, without exaggeration, been used in a large number of buildings of various purposes up to a height of 22 meters; residential blocks, health centers, schools, kindergartens and even gas stations!
Styrofoam in facades and floors has many advantages over other insulation materials that are water-sensitive (roof leaks, floods, water firefighting, etc.). When fully submerged for a month, Styrofoam sheets absorb less than 5% volume. After drying, they continue to perform their insulating function. The allowed water absorption of EPS boards (maximum 40%) in the heating season on facades is even 4 times greater than that of fibrous insulation, which can cause permanent damage due to condensation. With sensitive materials in contact with water and excessive moisture, expensive replacement of damaged surfaces may be necessary.
We cannot imagine energy-efficient buildings and high-quality residential spaces without expanded polystyrene [EPS]. In developed countries, 90% of all facades are insulated with expanded polystyrene. It is irreplaceable in most construction assemblies due to its exceptional properties. It is used wherever we need thermal and sound insulation for walls, roofs, floors, and other construction assemblies for various types of buildings.
Our vision is to remain the leading provider of thermal insulation, waterproofing, underfloor heating, and packaging in the markets of Central and Southeastern Europe for target groups of trading companies, construction companies, finishing works in construction (roofers, facades, floor layers, mechanical contractors, and industry).
