EPS – Expanded polystyrene
Styrofoam is an outstanding insulator
We can’t imagine modern buildings without expanded polystyrene (EPS). Almost 90% of all buildings are covered with expanded polystyrene (EPS). Due to outstanding properties, it is irreplaceable in almost all structural assemblies. We use it for heat and sound insulation of walls, roofs, floors, and other structural assemblies for all types of buildings.
How do the Styrofoam-covered walls “breathe”?
With the term breathing wall, the creators of commercials vividly describe the diffusion or penetration of water vapor through the walls. Most problems with the moisture in unwanted areas are due to the installation of new windows with effective sealing, which greatly reduces air exchange.
Fire, so what?
Expanded polystyrene is recognized as a self-extinguishing material, when under fire, although melting, must not allow the fire to spread. Buildings insulated with expanded polystyrene, which are covered with reinforced plaster and finish, provide class E reaction to fire. EPS panels are under EN 13501-1 in class E reaction to fire, or class B1 according to DIN 4102 (self-extinguishing materials).

Styrofoam is suitable for buildings for various purposes to a height of 22 meters. Apartment blocks, hospitals, schools, kindergartens, and even gas stations are all insulated by EPS (expanded polystyrene).
EPS panels are water-resistant!
Styrofoam has many advantages over other insulation sensitive to water. Styrofoam is resistant to floods, various water leaks, leaking roofs, and firefighting interventions. Styrofoam panels absorb less than 5% of water when completely soaked. Panels simply dry out afterward, and they still perform its superb insulating function. The allowed water absorption of styrofoam panels is four times greater than fibrous insulation, where due to condensation in unwanted areas, there can be permanent damage! Other insulations sensitive to water, and excessive moisture can often cause costly replacements if damaged.
